about

What can we tell you about The Lower Lights’ A Hymn Revival Volume 3 that you haven’t already learned from the first two volumes?

Actually a lot. Though, if you’re like most of us, you’d just as soon skip the reading and get to the listening. But, hey, albums need blurbs. And maybe you don’t own Volumes 1 and 2. So read on!

Recorded in two bursts (Sept 30-Oct 5, 2013 and Oct 17-18, 2014), A Hymn Revival Volume 3–rather than sounding like a band doing the same old thing, going through the motions–sounds like a band hitting its stride. Sure, it explores a landscape similar to its predecessors—folk, gospel, bluegrass, spirituals, all with a metric ton of harmonies, stringed instruments, pianos, and rumbles. But this time it broadens its reach, mining (relatively) more modern songs that you might have heard from the likes of Gillian Welch, Bill Monroe, Hank Williams, and more. (We said “relatively” more modern. What did you expect? Imagine Dragons?) And, just to keep things balanced, how about “All Creatures of Our God & King”, written by St. Francis of Assisi circa 1225?

Far from a retread, A Hymn Revival Volume 3 sounds like a band lighting a fire (or, with the quieter and prettier songs, just a really nice candle).

A Hymn Revival Volume 3 was produced and mixed by Scott Wiley at June Audio in Provo, UT. It was mastered by Reuben Cohen at Lurssen Mastering in Hollywood, CA. And the album’s beautiful artwork is a collaboration between Ryan Tanner and Jim Sherraden & Carl Carbonell at Hatch Show Print in Nashville, TN.
